Midwest Hopper Challenge

Yesterday in Ann Arbor Michigan Doug Chapman ran an awesome Crossfit competition at his gym Hyperfit USA. The entire event ran very smoothly. The movement standards were clear for the judges and athletes. The events were challenging, exposed weakness and showed athletes were they needed to get better.
We came with 8 athletes representing our gym David Ulmer, Phil Tassi, Jake Fanning, Chris Blannin, Dawn Elsa, Thomas Welsh, Heather Welsh, and Jenna Kuhlke. Each one of our athletes represented themselves very well in competition. Dave, Phil, Jake and Dawn all took top ten spots and Dave once again made the podium taking 2nd.
The competition was long and grueling with 4 stout workouts. Each athlete had notable performance throughout the day. Dave took first place on workouts 1 and 3 and had an overall great performance. I don’t think to many people would have a chance against him on the third workout. Phil had very solid performances in workouts 2 and 3 and was sitting in 4th going into the final workout. He ended up 6th overall and established himself as a solid and skilled athlete. Powerful Jake Fanning smashed the 3rd and final workout. A little miscue from his judge on his score card cost him a place or two in the standings but he had a really good day. Chris did awesome as well and was a few handstand push-ups away from completing all the workouts rx’d under the very tight time caps. He had a top 5 finish in the row and completed event 3 under the tight cap in which many athletes scaled or dnf’d. The workout featured 30 clean and jerks at 185 his previous 1 rep max. Thomas showed alot of potential and made a huge comeback on during the end of the final workout. Once he irons out a few small things he’s going to be tough.
The ladies did a great job as well! Dawn’s hard work is really starting to pay off and this competition showed it. Strong performances in the first two events really showed Dawn’s potential to score well in competition. A few skill movements tripped her up later on and kept her from making a run at the top few spots. Dawn works very hard on her weakness and she will be back stronger next time. Heather Welsh had a top ten performance on the first workout and finished the next two under the cap. Heather is one to watch out for at future competitions and has potential to do damage at regionals as an individual or affiliate team member. Jenna had a very strong performance in the first two workouts and was hanging tough on the final as well. Her strength and skill really showed in a great performance in her first competition!
All the athletes who participated in this event learned something they can work on and will become better for having done it! Great job!
